 2015 YAC Softball
UMPIRE PROGRAM INFORMATION SHEET
FOR PARENTS AND CANDIDATES

Over the past few years, YAC Softball has used middle and high school girls to umpire games in our 8u and 10u divisions.  This has been very successful and something that continues to grow.  As a result we have decided to have girls interested in this program apply for a position as an umpire.  Not all girls are successful as umpires regardless of their talent on the field as a player.  Here is what we are looking for and some of the traits we feel make up a good umpire:

  • A very good knowledge of the game of softball
  • A good knowledge of the ASA Softball rules
  • A very good knowledge of the modified YAC Rules (as listed on the website)
  • A very good knowledge of the YAC Code of Conduct
  • A strong and confident personality
  • A loud and clear voice
  • Someone who is not easily intimidated and can make the tough call
  • Someone who can be in control

We are asking that girls interested in being considered, please email the YAC Softball Commissioner at yacsoftball@verizon.net We will be having a mandatory training session on Thursday,April 16 at 5:30 at Downing Park. Girls must attend the session (new and returning umpires.) Umpiring is open to girls in 12u or older who have played or are playing YAC softball.

We have an umpire coordinator who handles the scheduling of the umpires and contacts the girls early in the week for their assignments.  Girls that are selected to be an umpire will be placed on a rotational call list.  Games could be any day of the week.  If you are scheduled to umpire a game, it will be your responsibility to get your daughter to her scheduled game 15 minutes prior to the start, and your responsibility to ensure she is picked up in a timely fashion after her game.  Depending upon the number of games and the number of umpires will depend upon when you are called.  You may not umpire every week.  Senior Umpires will be paid by one of the coaches of the game she umpires or by the division coordinator.

Safety equipment will be provided by YAC and will be stored in the field boxes located at the field where you are scheduled to umpire.  In the event a game is scheduled at an alternate field (202), one of the coaches will make sure the equipment is brought to the field.

The YAC Softball Commissioners will determine who is qualified as a YAC Softball Umpire. An Umpire may do games as a home plate umpire and will be paid.
