Dear Fellow PHMHA Members,

As you already know, the city of Port Huron is entertaining the idea of offering the McMorran Pavilion to SC4 for $1 eliminating the ice in the pavilion in the future.  Please see the press release below from PHMHA President Jim McPhee.

Press Release

June 30, 2015

For immediate release by:

PHMHA President Jim McPhee

“Minor Hockey Association bids $100,000 for McMorran Pavilion”

The Port Huron Minor Hockey Association “PHMHA” has submitted a letter of intent to the City of Port Huron to purchase the McMorran Pavilion for $100,000.

PHMHA is a volunteer run 501c3 non-profit organization.  It is one of the oldest youth hockey organizations in the State and traces its roots to 1955.  Since 1961, PHMHA has hosted the International Silver Stick finals tournament bringing as many as 7,000 people each year to the area from places as far away as Alaska, California, Florida and all of the provinces of Canada.  The tournament generates millions of tourism dollars for local businesses including hotels and restaurants.

The proposal comes at a time when City Council is considering gifting the Pavilion to the St. Clair County Community College for $1.00 over concerns of continuing public subsidies for operations and capital improvements.  PHMHA President Jim McPhee calls the proposal “a win-win situation for the City, hockey and the community which would allow all hockey currently played in McMorran to remain at the two downtown rinks including the Silver Stick tournaments and the 35 or so youth, high school, senior and professional teams which call McMorran home.”  The proposal would allow the City to shrink its McMorran footprint and focus on managing the Main Arena and Auditorium while relieving the City from any financial obligations related to the Pavilion.

McPhee says “the nature of our volunteer structure will allow us to run the Pavilion more efficiently with less costs.  Obviously, ownership of the Pavilion will also be a major incentive for us to increase participation in minor hockey, expand our donor base, reduce costs and maximize ice usage.  I believe our volunteers and community supporters are up to this challenge.”

McPhee says his organization is looking forward to exploring this proposal with the City and any other options which would keep hockey thriving in the downtown arenas.  McPhee says “PHMHA and the City of Port Huron have been collaborative partners for more than 50 years.  We are optimistic we can work together towards a solution which helps alleviate the City’s financial burden but also preserves both the strong youth hockey tradition and the McMorran complex.”
