Welcome to Haley Smith Basketball!

Haley Smith Basketball, also called Herndon Optimist Youth House Basketball (HOYHB), is one of the sports sponsored by the Herndon Optimist Club. Our mission is to provide youth of all skill levels an opportunity to enjoy a positive basketball experience, learn good sportsmanship and teamwork, and improve their basketball skills and physical condition. 

Our recreational house league is open to girls and boys in 1st through 12th grade who are residents of Fairfax or Loudoun Counties. We offer: 

  • Girls teams for grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-12 (our girls teams play games with teams from neighboring community youth sports leagues) 
  • Boys teams for grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 (our boys teams play games with teams in our own league)
  • An adapted basketball program called "Buddy Basketball" for youth in grades 1-8 who have disabilities and receive assistance to play basketball from high school student and adult volunteers
  • Training programs for new and returning referees and scorekeepers, which are paid positions.

Referee Development and Retention Incentive Program

Starting with the Winter 2018-2019 Season, we are implementing a new program to develop and retain youth referees in our league.

All Haley Smith Basketball referees receive 2-3 days of free training prior to the first regular season game. Based on the results of their floor evaluation, referees are paid according to their refereeing skill level: Senior Referee $35/game, Junior Referee $25/game, Candidate Referee $15/game. 

In addition, after a referee works a minimum of 20 games in a season, the next season their player registration fee will be reduced by 50% provided the player again referees. Once a referee works a minimum of 20 games for two seasons, their next season(s) the player registration fees will be waived provided the player again referees.

Referee registration is now open - click on the Register Online menu option and select the Referee Registration Program.
