Welcome to BHAI′s home on the web!

The Bayonne Hockey Association Inc. welcomes you to its website, and invites you to its home at the Richard Korpi Ice Rink in Bayonne, New Jersey (on the campus of Bayonne High School) to experience the best of youth hockey.  The BHAI offers teams at levels from Mite to Midget, and also offers powerskating sessions and pre-Mite programs.  It is the philosophy of the BHAI that all interested athletes should have the opportunity to develop their skills in settings appropriate to their skill level and time commitment, and the BHAI promotes ice hockey as sport in which one can learn physical skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork, on and off the ice.  Check us out!

Bayonne Ranger Players and Alumni are on their way to big future
by posted 08/08/2011

Last week former Bayonne Ranger Kevin Labanc (2004-2009) committed to the University of Notre Dame for fall of 2014. And just when he thought things couldnt be better, this past weekend he was presented an offer he couldn’t refuse as he was offered and accepted a place with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  The program consists of a U17 and a U18 program, which is combined into one team, which, in addition to its commitment to international and collegiate competition, plays a full-season 60 game schedule in the USHL. Kevin will be competing against the best in the world!

In speaking with Kevin earlier today, he thanked everyone at the Bayonne Rangers, where it all started. He was appreciative of the coaches that pushed him when he was young and the amount of time he got to be on the ice as a key to his development! Kevin will be heading to Ann Arbor Michigan on September 1st to join the US NTDP.

On behalf of the Bayonne Rangers, I wish Kevin the best of luck with the US National Team and then at Notre Dame a few years down the road!

Former Rangers Zach Aston Reese and Joe Gambardella will be showing off their talents in the USHL during the upcoming year with Zach starting his 2nd season with the USHL Lincoln Stars and moving toward his college commitment with NCAA D1 Brown University. Joe will start the year with the Rockets Jr. A team and expects to be in the USHL in October or November.

Another long time Ranger, Chris Peterson, will be playing for the Titans Jr B team. Long time Ranger Joe Giordano will be playing in the Tier 1 Midwest Elite League and moving to Michigan. A large group of last years U18 team will be trying out for their college teams. We wish all of these players alot of luck!

In Girls Hockey, Current Bayonne Ranger, Noelle Niemiec, just returned from Rochester NY after spending a week at USA Hockey’s Girls U14 National Team Developmental Program. Noelle competed against the top 100 girls in the country in her age group and continued our legacy of Ranger players being able to skate and play with the best of our country!! Noelle is a long time Ranger who started with us a squirt. Noelle came to the Rangers after tryouts and made the transition from figure skating to hockey. When she arrived in 2006 all she could do was skate and Russ Harvey, our ACE Coordinator, and I debated whether to take her on the team and give her a shot. She had no knowledge of hockey and in 5 years was able to make it to USA Hockey’s National Camp. Hopefully she will follow in another Ranger star girl player Lauren Vella’s shoes. Congrats Noelle!

As for Lauren, she will be attending Brown University this fall and playing D1 hockey for her school. Good Luck Lauren!

Amanda Peterson will continue playing Midget 16 hockey with us in addition to playing girls hockey and going up against the big boys playing Varsity HS Hockey for Hudson Catholic! Excellent Job girls!

I take a lot of personal satisfaction and pleasure in the success of Noelle, Kevin and Zach as I coached all 3 of them for multiple years and all while they were very young and just learning the game. I have great memories of all 3 players and hope to see them continue their success! All our younger players should look at these accomplishments and say why not me, maybe I can be the next in a what is turning out to be a line of Bayonne Ranger stars!

"When you pull on that jersey..."
by posted 02/05/2010

When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back! Get that through your head!

Hockey players and hockey families recognize that quote.  We are not really sure if Herb Brooks ever said it, but we know that Kurt Russell did when he portrayed Herb Brooks so that is usually good enough for us as hockey fans.  It lets us remember a movie, some games, and a gold medal.

But sometimes instead of remembering how our sports heroes really played, we should stop to remember how our real heroes played sports.  And that is why, with all due respect to HerbBrooks and/or Kurt Russell, that little yellow patch on the side of many youth hockey jerseys this year may be more important than what is on the front or the back.

We at the BHAI got a note of thanks this week from Charlie Gili who runs the Hockey Patch Campaign, and he wanted to thank Coach Calafiore and others at the BHAI because we were one of the first organizations outside New York to participate. He said “Yesterday I got a card in the mail that I want to share with you especially, since it is from a New Jersey family and the only reason the campaign is in NJ is because you encouraged me to expand.  I will try to find a way to work it into the next mailing I do, but please do share this with those you know who bought and wear our patches…I know that you will understand why I chose to share this one especially.  What we are doing really does have a positive impact on some very special families.”

That card said:

Dear Mr. Gili & Family & Hockey Players,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for recognizing the loss of our son Brian and for honoring him with your donation.  The monies in the Scholarship Fund are given annually to Senior Hockey Players and also to those who enlist in the military and graduate from Boot Camp.

Brian loved hockey.  He earned his Varsity Letter as a Freshman.  He played defense and had drive, dedication and determination that made  him a great Marine.

It is our hope that people like yourself will continue to support our troops and their mission.

I will place the patch in his Marine Album.  I am a Brooklyn native (East Flatbush) so your gift was extra special.  Thank you again for recognizing not only Lance Corporal Brian P. Parrello, but all who served before and after him too.

Fondly, Shirley "Proud Marine Mom"  Love, The Parrello Family; Shirley, Nino, Matthew & Anthony (Proud Family of USMC Lance Corporal Brian P. Parrello KIA1-1-05 in Iraq from West Milford, NJ)

Brian Parrello was 19 when killed in action—only a little bit beyond the age of our Midgets—and his family was thanking us.

If anyone else is interested in getting more patches, you can let your team manager know, and we will also be taking orders for them in spring/summer when we order new jerseys for those who need them.
