2017-18 Lindsay's Law Compliance

Ohio's Sudden Cardiac Arrest Requirements & Guidelines

Ohio State Senate Bill 252, also known as Lindsay's Law, was passed into law in the spring of 2016, becoming Ohio Revised Code 3313.5310, 3707.58 and 3707.59. It's requirements became effective in 2017.

Lindsay's Law is named after former Miss Ohio Lindsay Davis who became a national heart health advocate because she suffers from a heart condition. Because she was also a student athlete and could have very easily fallen victim to sudden cardiac arrest without her coaches suspecting any issues, she is an advocate for raising awareness, and providing guidelines and information to parents, athletes, and coaches.

Lindsay's Law requires youth sports organizations to provide annually information and guidelines developed by the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and other stakeholders to participating athletes, their parents. and coaches. It also requires youth sports organizations to collect acknowledgements from the parents, athletes, and coaches that they have received and reviewed the information provided.

In order to comply with Lindsay's Law, DHA has created brief online sessions for parents and their players, and coaches. These sessions consist of applicable videos (16 - 18 minutes), two pages of reading material, and some brief acknowledgements.

In order to take the ice and/or remain on the ice, coaches, the parent/legal guardian and their athlete(s), regardless of age, MUST complete this online session. These sessions must be completed by the parents and players in accordance with the following deadlines:

JV  Team: December 31, 2017

House Division Teams: December 31, 2017.

Hockey Is For Everyone

The Columbus Ice Hockey Club is part of the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone program, established through the NHL Foundation (the NHL’s charitable and community relations organization).

"Hockey is a powerful force that helps young people build character, foster positive values and develop important life skills. As a Hockey is for Everyone program, Columbus Ice Hockey Club provides a supportive and inclusive environment where boys and girls can make friends, get active and become a great teammate on and off the ice." – Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner

"The sport of hockey can teach you quite a bit – dedication, perseverance, respect.  In our Hockey is for Everyone programs, we encourage athletes to prioritize a commitment to their education while setting personal goals off the ice, and working hard to achieve those goals.  If you think you can, you can; if you think you can't… you're right.  You never fail until you stop trying." -- Willie O'Ree, NHL Diversity Ambassador and first black player to compete in the NHL.
